Group of diverse Sparrow caregivers

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging

It’s not a destination, it’s a journey.

At UM Health-Sparrow, we are committed to maintaining a caring, respectful and inclusive culture that supports and values the diversity of our patients, caregivers and the community. Every day, we strive to be a place of healing where everyone feels like they belong – because everyone does.

Our culture is driven by our Mission: To improve the health of the people in our communities by providing quality, compassionate care to everyone, every time. We welcome and support a diverse workforce to accomplish our mission, and our VALUES guide our caregivers as we provide care for our patients. The expectation for our caregivers is to adhere to our ICARE values daily and continue to maintain a welcoming and inclusive environment to work and to receive care.

Through our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Department, UM Health-Sparrow uses evidence-based practices and cultural competency training to ensure that the differences among our patients, caregivers and the communities we serve are recognized and respected.

The journey starts here.

As the area’s only community-owned healthcare system, UM Health-Sparrow is committed to having a workforce that reflects the people and cultures that make Mid-Michigan such a wonderful place to live and work.

When our leaders and caregivers reflect the communities we serve, UM Health-Sparrow is better positioned to succeed. It’s imperative to hire people from diverse backgrounds who will add different perspectives, new information and worldviews where their contributions will make UM Health-Sparrow stronger in delivering the best patient care.

At UM Health-Sparrow, we hold all caregivers accountable for promoting and modeling inclusive behaviors where differences – even among caregivers themselves – are respected, valued and seen as positive. To that end, UM Health-Sparrow provides numerous opportunities for caregivers to network and share ideas and solutions through Caregiver Resource Groups, including:
