Sparrow Clinton Hospital

Donald L. Porter, MD, grew up in a family of engineers, seemingly a far cry from the passion of medicine.

"To me, it was always important that they were putting out a product. Caregivers don't put out something tangible – a widget that has a $10 value, for instance. But what we do is just as important. We give people a chance to live and be productive."

Porter has been a general surgeon at Clinton for more than 30 years. He's honed a style that keeps things simple for Patients and their families, communicating complex medical procedures in a simple way.

He says he likes the small-town connections he's able to make with Patients at Clinton.

"Everybody here really tries to take care of each other. The staff is treating their friends and neighbors. That's a really nice thing about being here."
