Exceptional children’s healthcare in the community you call home

You want to make sure your child is receiving the best possible care. So do we.

UM Health-Sparrow Children’s Center is a joint venture between Michigan Medicine and UM Health-Sparrow Lansing. Because of this collaboration, we’re able to offer the most comprehensive range of specialty services to our pediatric patients and their families in Mid-Michigan.

At the Children’s Center, Michigan Medicine, Michigan State University and UM Health-Sparrow pediatricians offer children’s healthcare services such as cardiology, genetics, hematology/oncology, neurology,  neurosurgery, urology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, nephrology and ophthalmology. We provide physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and more.

We support parents and caretakers like you by giving kids the highest quality care, close to home.

The most advanced pediatric healthcare facilities in the region

UM Health-Sparrow Children’s Center is home to Mid-Michigan’s only Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (RNICU). The RNICU is the regional destination for critically ill infants and premature babies who need some extra support.

If you are currently a patient elsewhere, our specially trained ground transport crew and care team will help bring your baby to UM Health-Sparrow, where our experienced team of neonatologists can provide your baby with the expert care he or she needs.

UM Health-Sparrow also offers the region’s only full-service emergency room for children. The Granger Pediatric Emergency Room is specially designed, equipped, and staffed to support the unique needs of children and their families.

When it comes to caring for your child’s health, we’re a team

At the UM Health-Sparrow Children’s Center, our goal is family-centered pediatric care that keeps parents involved and informed. During daily rounds, you can talk one-on-one with your care team. And we keep your child’s chart right at the bedside, so you can easily review his or her diagnosis, lab results and plan of care.

We want to make sure the whole family feels comfortable. The children’s clinic is designed with fun, kid-friendly decor and a dedicated playroom, plus a teen lounge with books, gaming and air hockey.

Most importantly, our dedicated pediatric caregivers have received a five-star award for the quality of care for 2019 inpatient pediatric services by Professional Research Consultants. In 2019, we were ranked in the top 10 percent nationwide for overall quality of care.

More community and more resources to help families like yours

We know that supporting your child through an illness can feel like a daunting journey. But with the help of UM Health-Sparrow support staff — and the whole Mid-Michigan community — you won’t be alone.

The children’s health center staff includes Child Life specialists who help children manage anxiety about medical procedures, deal with the stress of a hospital stay or handle any other health-related challenges.

Our volunteers are also here to help. The Davies Project provides transport for sick kids in Mid-Michigan. Former RNICU parents volunteer as mentors and guides to help current RNICU parents cope. We even get a twice-weekly visit from a top-notch team of certified therapy dogs.

Families with a little longer to travel can rely on the nearby Ronald McDonald House, which provides any caregiver of a hospitalized child with a welcoming place to stay, whatever their financial circumstances.
