Without a doubt, Sparrow has raised a great deal of money with the help of Children’s Miracle Network programs over the years for projects in the Sparrow Regional Children’s Center.

Since becoming a CMN hospital in 1988, many projects have been successfully completed and more are in the works with the construction of a new pediatric emergency room. While the new facility plans are exciting, without the best doctors, nurses and technicians what good is a brand new structure? What good is a new, efficiently designed Pediatric ER if it is attached to wards that are in desperate need of renovation?

In order to maintain the level of care currently available at the Sparrow Regional Children’s Center, the Sparrow Foundation formed the Sparrow Pediatric Program Fund spearheaded by a community group. The focus of this group is two-fold. First, to plan and raise funds to recruit new pediatric sub-specialty physicians—to be sure the Sparrow Regional Children’s Center has the resources to treat all of Lansing’s children, regardless of their diagnosis.

Pediatric Sub-Specialty Physicians support the Sparrow Regional Children’s Center by making it unnecessary for Lansing area children to travel far from their homes and families for treatment of rare diseases or injuries. Currently Sparrow is home to several pediatric sub-specialists with impressive credentials. Some of these specialty doctors include:

• Pediatric Endocrinologist providing services for infants and children with endocrine and metabolic disorders including diabetes, problems of growth, puberty and sexual development.
• Pediatric Gastroenterologist specializing in disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, liver and pancreas and nutrition.
• Pediatric Hematologist and Oncologist treating children who have cancer as well as problems of the blood and blood-forming tissues.
• Pediatric Infectious Diseases specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of both common and rare infectious conditions.

• Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in healing infants, children and adolescents with congenital or developmental orthopedic problems as well as emergency cases.
• Pediatric Pulmonologist providing treatment for children with acute and chronic respiratory problems.
• Pediatric Nephrologist specializing in diseases of the kidney and lower urinary tract.

Everyone hopes that they will never need the services of these doctors, but it is so important to have these pediatric specialists available and close at hand when they are needed. The Pediatric Program Fund will raise monies specifically to recruit these specialists for the Sparrow Regional Children’s Center.

The second focus of the Pediatric Program Fund is to plan and raise funds for the refurbishment of the Sparrow Regional Children’s Center 5th floor ward. While the 5th floor did undergo significant renovations in 1989, it is once again beginning to show the signs of heavy use. Treating 25,000 children every year has taken it’s toll on the rooms in which they and their families stay. The goal of the Pediatric Program fund is to find sponsors for the thirty-eight rooms on the 5th floor of the Sparrow Regional Children’s Center. Sponsorships will be at the $25,000 level and it is important to begin work as soon as possible.
