Quit smoking: Talk to your health provider

Updated: 04-15-2011

If you haven't talked to your doctor or health care provider about quitting smoking, do so now. You and your doctor can discuss which, if any, stop-smoking products are right for you. If you intend to use nicotine replacement therapy or take prescription medications to help you quit, you need time to line them up before your quit-smoking day. The prescription medications bupropion (Zyban) and varenicline (Chantix) must be started at least one week before your quit-smoking day to be effective.
