Tuesday, September 17, 2013 - New date, new activities for 2013 Sparrow Clinton Hospital Community Health Fair

Sparrow Clinton Hospital changes things up in September. From a new date to its featured events, the annual Community Health Fair sponsored by Sparrow Clinton Hospital is getting an update.

This year’s health fair takes place Saturday, Sept. 28 – two weeks earlier than the traditional October date. The St. Johns location (RESA Building at 1013 S. US 27) and time (8:30 am to noon) remain the same, but the hospital plans to pack a lot of new activities into that three and a half hour span.

In addition to 40 booths of health resources and information and FREE influenza shots, cholesterol testing and blood pressure checks, Clinton County residents can enjoy the following new activities at the Sept. 28 health fair.

  • A Snack Attack: Kids’ Healthy Snack Contest allows children ages 8 to 12 years to test their culinary abilities by creating a healthy snack. Snacks must include at least 2 of the following food groups – Veggies, Fruit, Grain, Protein or Dairy. Kids bring a copy of their recipe and 1 sample of their snack for judges and nutritional experts to evaluate. Celebrity judges are Dave Hunt of St. Johns Big Boy Restaurant and Mayor Dana Beaman along with Sparrow dieticians Judy Miller and Lesley Phillip. Prizes are awarded based on healthy ingredients, appearance, and recipe. Top prize is a Kindle Fire tablet. Second prize winner receives an iPod Shuffle with iTunes gift card. Honorable Mention prize winners walk off with one of three of iTunes gift cards. Set-up at 9:30am. Judging at 10am.
  • The Teen Scene: Disconnect to Reconnect gives teenagers and their parents an opportunity to explore some of the challenges that face young people in a rapidly changing world. Risks presented include human trafficking (Michigan ranks 3rd in the nation), bullying, drug use, depression and suicide. RAGE Student Ministry of the First Assembly Church in East Lansing uses movie clips and other electronic media to open discussion on tough topics for teens.

Zombie walkers must seek out five stations to obtain stickers on their entry cards in a drawing for one of four copies of the Max Brooks book, The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead or two $25 iTunes gift cards.
  • Move It! 15 Minutes of Fitness gives kids and adults a chance to try Zumba, Yoga, Pilates, Step, Pump, Spinning, Weights, and Silver Sneakers®. In addition, Kids Play and Crazy Kids activities for preschoolers and kindergarteners take place throughout the day Adult and children’s fitness sessions are held in the SCH Rehab & Fitness Center, beginning at 10 am and continuing through Noon.
  • Farm to Table Farmers Market puts fresh, locally grown produce at fairgoers fingertips.
