Wednesday, September 18, 2013 - Sparrow response to CDC report on drug-resistant bacteria

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a report on drug-resistant health threats and outlines core actions to halt resistance.

Sparrow has action plans in place for the drug-resistant microorganisms in the report as well as a comprehensive infection prevention program based on the CDC and other evidence-based guidelines. The program includes:

  • Tracking rates of drug-resistant infections among Sparrow inpatient and outpatient populations
  • Preventing the spread of these organisms by implementing special precautions for persons who have been diagnosed to have drug-resistant infections at one of our hospitals or ambulatory sites
  • Using evidence-based practices to conduct thorough room and surface cleaning to ensure all organisms are killed, with special precautions taken for hard-to-kill bacteria
  • Providing education and training to Caregivers, Patients, and Volunteers
  • Sparrow also partners with the Michigan Department of Community Health on infection prevention activities aimed at reducing risks in our community and at other healthcare and skilled nursing facilities.

    You can help protect yourself and your family from drug-resistant infections by regularly washing your hands, avoiding sharing towels and other personal care items, and maintaining good hygiene, including a daily shower.
