Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program (SANE)
Mission Statement
The goal of the sexual assault nurse examiner program is to provide free coordinated, timely, comprehensive and compassionate care to pediatric and adult victims of sexual assault. The SANE program is available
24 hours a day and provides an environment that is patient focused. A protocol for treatment of the sexual assault patient is followed under the medical director and the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) standards of practice. The SANE program nurses work collaboratively with police, prosecutors, child protective services and community advocacy services to provide optimal and coordinated care.

Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Definition: A sexual assault nurse examiner is a registered nurse specially trained to provide care to sexual assault patients. The sexual assault nurse examiner conducts medical forensic examinations and can serve as an expert witness.

History & Funding
The S.A.N.E. program was established in January of 1997. This project is supported by the Crime Victim Assistance Award #20578-10V05, awarded to Sparrow Hospital by the Michigan Crime Victim Services Commission, Michigan Department of Community Health.
The grant award of $120,973 (80% of the project) comes from the Federal Crime Victims Fund, established by The Victims of Crime Act of 1984. Sparrow Hospital provides the required 20% match of $30,243.
