Basic Diabetic Diet

Quick Links:

In order to keep your blood sugar from getting too high or too low, you should:

  1. Eat 3 meals a day - Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.
  2. Eat a snack before bed if your doctor or dietitian suggests a snack.
  3. Eat about the same amount of food at each meal.
  4. Space your meals evenly throughout the day (about 4 hours between meals).
  5. For the time being, avoid sugar and foods that are sweetened. Twice a week, a small serving of the following foods would be okay:
    • Jell-O
    • Regular pop
    • Kool-Aid sweetened with sugar
    • Dessert (cake, candy, brownies, cookies, pie, doughnuts)
    • Syrup, jams, jellies, molasses, corn syrup

You can learn more about your diet from a Registered Dietitian: Classes and private counseling are available. Call 517.364.2387 for more information.

  6. Try to eat a variety of foods including:
    • Lowfat milk or yogurt
    • Lean meat, poultry, fish, lowfat cheese, or eggs
    • Fruit or unsweetened fruit juices
    • Breads, cereals, pasta, rice or potatoes
    • Vegetables, fresh or frozen
