Avoiding Excessive Gas

  1. Avoid Gas-Producing Foods: Foods act differently with different people. Foods which produce gas in one person may not have the same effect in another. The following is a list of foods that may cause gas:

    onions, onion powder
    sauerkraut
    cabbage
    radishes
    turnips
    cucumbers
    legumes (dried peas & beans)

    broccoli
    brussels sprouts
    cauliflower
    peppers
    raw apples
    melons
    berries

    highly spiced foods
    carbonated beverages
    beer
    fish
    sea food
    garlic
    stewed fruit

    You as an individual may not need to avoid all the foods on the above list. To determine if one of these foods does produce gas, add each food item slowly to your diet. Eat only a small amount at a time. You will soon learn which foods produce gas.

  1. Eat at Routine Times: You cannot prevent gas by not eating. An empty bowel produces gas. No matter what's on your schedule, eat when you usually do.

  2. Correct Eating Technique: How you eat is even more important than what you eat. Most intestinal gas is produced by swallowed air. Learn to relax, eat leisurely, and chew well. Try not to talk while you eat. You'll feel more comfortable.
