Dealing with the Discomforts of Pregnancy
Many pregnant women experience one or more of the following discomforts. During these times, it may be
difficult to eat well or eat at all. Here are some tips to try:
Nausea and Vomiting (morning sickness)
- Keep crackers by your bedside. Eat a few before you get out of bed in the morning. Get out of bed slowly and avoid sudden movements.
- Eat foods that are dry (dry cereal, plain toast, plain crackers).
- Drink liquids between meals instead of with meals.
- Eat what sounds good to you.
- Relax after meals. Recline but don't lie flat.
- Eat several small meals and snacks during the day. Have a snack (yogurt, milk, juice, bread, or a small sandwich) before going to bed or during the night.
- Avoid smells that bother you.
- Avoid high-fat food (fried foods, bacon, rich desserts).
- Try low-fat protein foods (lean meat, broiled or canned fish, poultry without skin, eggs, cooked dried beans or peas).
- Try salty and sour combinations like pickles or lemonade with soda crackers, popcorn, pretzels or potato chips.
Heartburn or Feeling Full
- Eat small meals and snacks throughout the day.
- Eat slowly and chew your food well.
- Avoid spicy or high-fat food.
- Avoid food that causes you to burp (pop, onions, cabbage, broccoli, sparkling water).
- Wear loose clothing.
- Sit-up or recline after meals, but don't lie flat.
- Avoid eating just before you go to bed.
- Drink small amounts of liquids with meals and include additional fluids between discomfort.
- Don't drink alcohol. In addition to causing birth defects, it can also cause heartburn.
Constipation or Hemorrhoids
- Drink at least 6 to 8 cups of liquids a day (water, fruit juice, soup, and milk).
- Eat whole grain breads and cereals, fresh fruits and vegetables, and dried fruits (especially prunes). When you eat more of these foods, be sure to drink plenty of liquids.
- Eat meals and snacks about the same time every day.
- Increase your physical activity. Ask your doctor what is safe for you.
- Do not take laxatives unless approved by your doctor.
