Your Admission
After you arrive on the unit, a registered nurse will interview you. You will be asked routine admission questions so that we can assist you in meeting your physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. The nurse will assist all staff to safely and correctly identify you for procedures such as lab tests. The nurse will offer you a "release of information" form to sign. This form details people and organizations (e.g. family, other hospitals and doctors) you want to let know that you are in the hospital. If a release is not signed, no information can be given to anyone (by phone or written form).

We strongly believe in and support your rights to confidential treatment. Information will not be released without your approval.

You will be admitted to either the open unit or the closed unit, which is the Intensive Care Area (ICA). ICA staffing provides for closer supervision and more intensive nursing care than the open unit. Many of our patients are admitted to ICA to allow for close observation and assessment. Some patients may need to remain in ICA longer if they are unable to care for themselves or are a danger to themselves or others.

Soon after admission, you will be given a physical exam and complete routine lab tests, just as you would if admitted to a medical hospital.

If you bring medication with you at the time of admission, you are requested to send it home with a family member or friend. If this is not possible, it will be stored in the hospital pharmacy until your discharge. No unauthorized drugs or alcohol are permitted on the unit at any time.

In order to protect your right to confidentiality, cameras and tape recorder are not allowed on the unit. (Please read the booklet, Your Rights, for further explanation of confidentiality and your rights as a patient.) Television and stereo are provided for your entertainment; therefore, individual stereo equipment and televisions are not permitted on the unit.

Community Living
Our goal is to provide an atmosphere that is safe, pleasant and therapeutic, while protecting your dignity, privacy, confidentiality and treating you with respect.

Weekly community meetings are held for all patients and staff members. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss commonly shared issues. We welcome any suggestions to improve the unit's functioning and atmosphere.

Your Treatment Plan
Soon after admission, you will be assigned to a treatment team and meet the team members who will work with you. After assessing your individual needs, your team will work with you to develop a plan of care. Your doctor will explain your treatment plan to you so that you will know what needs to occur prior to discharge. Patients are encouraged to give input at the treatment team meeting.

As you progress in your treatment, and as you take on more responsibility for yourself, your step level will be adjusted accordingly. Your step level changes are determined by your doctor in agreement with other members of the treatment team.

Your Daily Schedule
Your meals are served cafeteria-style in the Day Room. Beverages and light snacks are available throughout the day in the Day Room.

One day each week, your activity therapist will work with you in developing a schedule of the groups and activities for the coming week.

You will have sufficient free time each day to attend to personal needs. A washer, dryer, and iron are available for you to care for your clothing. The hospital provides bed linens, towels, and pajamas as you need them.

You are encouraged to sleep from midnight to 6 am The Day Room remains open at night, but the TV room, lobby area, and phones are not available during the night shift (11 pm to 7 am). Feel free to ask any staff person for assistance.
