The Best Techniques
Oncological surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and drug therapies are all powerful medicine - and are the very best methods for treating cancer.
Using a multidisciplinary approach that employs combinations of these cutting-edge techniques, our oncology staff suggests comprehensive treatment regimens designed for each patient.
So that our patients can feel certain about choosing their own course of treatment, Sparrow's oncology team members make sure that each patient understands their options.
Cancer Surgery
Many times, cancer treatment begins with surgery. Patients also have access to a full complement of experienced
cancer surgeons, surgical specialists, and sub-specialists, who focus on the physical and emotional aspects of
patient treatment. Our surgical team carefully explains every patient's surgical options and performs in
state-of-the-art operating rooms equipped with the latest robotic microsurgery systems
(click here for more information on da Vinci® Robotic Surgery).
Chemotherapy
Our board-certified hematologists/oncologists employ the latest advanced protocols in fighting cancer. Chemotherapy is provided in a very patient-friendly environment featuring all private rooms. In addition, all of our
nurses have specialized training in oncology care.
Radiation Oncology
Treatment may involve radiation therapy to destroy tumor cells. Our board-certified radiation oncologists have at their disposal the latest in radiation oncology technology. Working in concert with board certified medical physicists,
they specifically tailor treatment for each patient's condition.
Gynecological Oncology
Dr. Joseph Meunier leads the Sparrow Regional Cancer Center's gynecological oncology team. Dr. Meunier has the distinction of being the region's only board-certified gynecological oncology specialist. Dr. Meunier specializes in the diagnosis
and treatment of all gynecological malignancies, including cervical, endometrial and ovarian cancers as well as symptom control and palliative care.
Dr. Meunier is the first mid-Michigan physician to use the minimally invasive da Vinci® Robotic System to surgically treat gynecological cancers. For women whose hysterectomy surgery involves
lymph node removal due to cancer, this means shorter hospital stays and smaller incisions.
Hematology
The study of hematology is continually evolving as we gain a better understanding of
the mechanism of bleeding, clotting and other blood disorders. Sparrow
hematologists work with other specialists including cardiologists,
internists and vascular surgeons using the latest strategies to manipulate
enzymes, proteins and blood factors to minimize bleeding and clotting
events. They also treat disorders of blood cells, platelets and the bone
marrow.
