Sparrow is the only hospital in mid-Michigan to offer a Child Life Program. This program features a well-equipped playroom, special programs, trained child life specialists, and volunteers who help pediatric patients deal with their sickness or injury through play, education and emotional support.
Child Life Specialists help children and families deal with the stress and anxiety associated with hospitalization. They do this through developmentally appropriate play activities, including medical play opportunities that encourage communication of feelings and mastery over medical equipment.
The Child Life Program also offers a Surgery Orientation for children that are scheduled for upcoming surgery at Sparrow Hospital. This class, offered twice a week, is designed to reduce anxiety associated with the future hospitalization and includes a slideshow, tour and the opportunity for medical play.
