Trauma Services
Sparrow is a Regional Trauma Center. This means that we have Trauma Surgeons in the hospital 24 hours per day, ready to care for injured patients.
Care of the trauma patient begins with the paramedics and emergency medical technicians at the scene. The trauma
surgeon and trauma residents meet the patient in the Emergency Department. An emergency physician, registered nurse,
and emergency technician are also present, with staff members from the lab, radiology, respiratory therapy, blood
bank, pastoral care, and the operating room. Other subspecialists are readily available as needed, including orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, plastic surgeons,
obstetricians, and pediatric intensivists.

The Trauma Surgeons and multidisciplinary trauma team members continue to care for the injured patient throughout
their hospital stay, providing care until they are well enough to be discharged from the hospital.
In addition to patient care, Sparrow’s Regional Trauma center is concerned with injury prevention. Education is
provided to other hospitals, schools, and community groups. Sparrow is also the lead agency of Capital Area SAFE
KIDS Coalition, which is an organization dedicated to reducing unintentional injury in children by implementing
programs and policies that are based on the needs of the community.
