Tradition. Many people speak of it. Those at Sparrow live it in the way they care for their patients, in the care they take in training and developing their medical staff. We invite you to join the Sparrow Hospital team for your residency and experience the challenge and rewards of living a tradition.
Building a Better Community... In 1896, 37 women founded what is now Sparrow Hospital. From those humble beginnings, Sparrow Hospital
has grown to become a 697-bed teaching hospital and a leader in innovative health care in mid-Michigan. There's one thing that hasn't changed
about Sparrow Hospital - its reason for being. Back then, as today, Sparrow exists to build a better community, by being a leader in the
academic and professional training of its medical staff, and by being committed to advancing clinical and therapeutic applications,
principles, and modalities.
Being Challenged to Grow... Residents at Sparrow Hospital receive 600 hours of continuing education on-site. Our teaching staff, selected from among the total medical staff, includes private practice physicians and 70 members of the Michigan State University academic medical staff. Sparrow's high standards for medical practitioners attracts an excellent staff who actively participate in educational programs at all levels. Sparrow was first in the state of Michigan to be fully certified for a medical staff continuing education program.
Sparrow is a major affiliate of the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and College of Osteopathic Medicine. The 70 members of these two
colleges who teach at Sparrow participate in daily rounds, conferences, consultations, and other teaching activities with Sparrow's private
attending staff. Sparrow Hospital staff members frequently hold clinical appointments at Michigan State University . Residents are eligible for appointments as well.
The Sparrow Library maintains a large collection of both print and electronic resources in support of the
mission of Sparrow Health System. The Library has a collection of over 4000 print monographs and 120 print
journal subscriptions. It is, however, the electronic collection that is most impressive. Access to over
400 core medical reference works and 1200 electronic medical journals is provided to the entire Sparrow
Health System computer network. Additionally, a large number of evidence-based medicine databases along with
traditional access to MEDLINE is provided through multiple platforms. Library Associates also provide
literature search, inter-library loan and instructional services. The Library has 10 computer workstations
providing access to the Internet, scanning devices, printing, and Microsoft Office. Visit the Sparrow Health Sciences Library
for a complete list of resources and services.
Learn Through Experience... Residents at Sparrow Hospital have the space and time to focus on learning in the clinical setting. They make clinical decisions in a nurturing environment. They concentrate on learning from experiences derived through caring for patients. They can do this because of the special support services made available to Sparrow residents. An active intravenous team, medical technologists to draw specimens, and clinical pharmacists to assist with therapeutic details, dosages, hyperalimentation and drug interaction allow residents to make the most of their time at Sparrow Hospital.
Our Cardiopulmonary Department works closely with residents, as do orthopedic technologists and social workers. Special institutional programs give residents valuable experience in such areas as diabetes education, hemodialysis, ostomy, mastectomy, oncology, pharmacology and post-partum care.
Residents at Sparrow interact frequently with other professionals in internal medicine, surgery, radiology, OB/GYN, pathology, pediatrics and emergency medicine.
Sparrow's full range of progressive patient care services will expose residents to the widest possible range of
experiences, including:
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit,
Rehabilitation Medical Center,
Diabetes Center,
Dialysis Unit, and the Neurological Intensive Care Unit.
In many cases, you'll see leading technologies and techniques, especially in our well known
Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Oncology Unit, and
Cardiac Care Unit.
Throughout your experiences, whether routine patient care or participating in any of the over 15,000 in-patient and out-patient surgeries each year, you'll be guided by medical professionals who bring both the rigors of academia and the insight of everyday practice to their instruction. You'll be supported in your learning by extensive resources and equipment.
The Best of Both Worlds... In 1997, St. Lawrence Hospital joined the Sparrow Health System. As a result, the Sparrow and MSU/St. Lawrence Family Medicine Residency Programs integrated into a combined community-based, university-affiliated Family Medicine Program. A shared mission statement, vision, and curriculum were developed and final approval and accreditation was achieved. The combined program began on July 1, 1999 and offers:
- Functionally unopposed resident training
- Blended traditional and longitudinal curriculum structure
- Family medicine taught by family physicians in a collegial atmosphere
- Family-centered and high-risk obstetrical training
- Strong emphasis on procedures, occupational/sports medicine and practice management
- Humane, family-like atmosphere in a large community hospital where family practitioners are highly valued and respected
- Partnership with Michigan State University
Our goal is to create a premier Family Medicine Residency Program in mid-Michigan. Together,
the original programs provided 50 years of family medicine training before combining in 1999. Both programs contributed
highly qualified, dedicated faculty with extensive experience in resident education. Our current faculty has up to 28 years of
residency education teaching experience.
The Sparrow/MSU Family Medicine Residency Program offers a truly excellent, cutting-edge curriculum that accurately reflects the
dynamic nature of the specialty of family medicine. But don't just take our word for it. Talk to one of our residents or
arrange a visit. It won't take long for you to see what we mean, and to understand how a tradition of caring makes for a pleasant, dynamic learning and working environment.
