Myths and Facts

Myth: The "Newest" Cosmetic surgical technique is always the "best".
Fact: The effectiveness of any new technique should be demonstrated through clinical studies that are published in reputable specialty journals to determine validity. Once the technique is evaluated by experienced plastic surgeons to verify its safety and effectiveness, then it becomes accepted. Techniques that seem promising at first are abandoned if they fail to show safe and consistent results.

Quick Links:

Myth: Most women who undergo breast augmentation are in their 20's.
Fact: Around 35% of breast augmentation patients are women in middle adulthood (between ages 35 and 50 years old). Some women seek breast augmentation because they have never been happy with their breast size. Others wish to restore their breast size and shape to what it was before having children.

Myth: Lipoplasty (liposuction) is an effective treatment for overall weight loss.
Fact: Lipoplasty can remove localized collections of fatty tissue in many areas of the body such as the hips, buttocks, abdomen, thighs and back. These fatty deposits, which often are hereditary, may not respond to diet or exercise; in such cases, lipoplasty is not a cure for obesity. It you have already lost a great deal of weight and have loose, hanging skin, your plastic surgeon may recommend a skin tightening procedure such as a tummy tuck or thigh lift.

Myth: If you have one facelift, you will eventually need another.
Myth: Having more than one facelift will give you an "unnatural" look.
Fact: Normally, results of a facelift will last eight to ten years. Most people who have had one facelift will, at the appropriate time, want another in order to continue looking their best. Some people, however, may be perfectly happy with the way they look and not feel the need for more surgery. Patients who elect to have a second facelift are usually pleased to find that the results are as good, and sometimes even better, than the first. The good news is that, whether you have one or more facelifts, you will look better and younger than you would have without surgery.
