Today’s emergency room is more than quality care and equipment. It represents our community’s preparedness for a world that sometimes can change from serene to catastrophic at a moment’s notice. In many instances, the ER serves as the hospital’s doorway for our community’s needs.

As the region’s only Level One Trauma Center, Sparrow’s Emergency Room is always prepared, 24 hours a day to provide expert medical and nursing care to the most critically ill and injured people of mid-Michigan. It has been that way, every day, without fail, for the past 109 years.

We’ve earned a reputation for quality care. It’s taken a lot of hard work, continual effort and exceptional leadership to get to this point. But for you and your loved ones, and the overall health of the community, it’s well worth it. The next step for our emergency room is a major expansion to meet the increasing needs of our community. With your support, together we will achieve that and more.

Over the past 10 years in the Sparrow Emergency Room there has been a 100-percent increase in patient visits. In a facility originally designed to treat less than 50,000 patients a year, the number of yearly visits are approaching 100,000. With growth expected to continue, it is critical to our community that Sparrow’s ER, the busiest in our region, expand to meet these needs.

Our goal is to more than double the size of our ER to meet a growing patient base now and well into the future. Sparrow’s new ER will feature the latest emergency medicine technology, streamlined service, special areas for different types of emergencies and more private treatment areas.

Today’s Sparrow Emergency Room (ER) is the most highly utilized in the region, with more than 100,000 patient visits annually. When the current ER was built, the number of patient visits numbered approximately 50,000 annually. As our region’s only community-owned, community-governed hospital, Sparrow spends more than $50 million each year to provide care for the uninsured and under-insured. Sparrow’s ER is our region’s only Level One Trauma Center. Community donations will: Expand Sparrow’s ER to more than double the size of the existing facility providing more private rooms and enlarging family waiting areas. Furnish the ER with new, state-of-the-art equipment. Allow for new, patient-centered features, such as bedside registration. Expand and enhance the waiting room and triage area. Ensure that Sparrow attracts and retains the finest emergency medicine specialists to care for our patients.
