Building a Pediatric ER

For more than a century, Sparrow has been a leader in caring for the children of our community. From offering the first hospital children’s ward in mid-Michigan to today’s comprehensive Sparrow Regional Children’s Center, Sparrow is renowned for our firsts in providing high quality health care for children.

Our philanthropic efforts seek to bring another first to mid-Michigan – the region’s first pediatric emergency room. From entrance to exit, Sparrow’s Pediatric ER will be uniquely designed to address the needs of ill and injured children. We treat more than 25,000 child emergencies a year, and we recognize the need of a dedicated staff of physicians, nurses and support staff trained in pediatric care.

Sparrow’s Pediatric ER will feature pediatric specialists and separate treatment areas that ensure privacy for families. All will be equipped with the latest in diagnostic and therapeutic monitoring equipment to minimize separating families from their children during the course of their child’s treatment.

Already more than $3 million has been raised through the Coaches and Athletes for Kids and Officials for Kids Funds to build Sparrow’s Pediatric ER.

Sparrow treats more children than any other health care provider in mid-Michigan. Every year, more than 25,000 emergency room visits involve children, and this number is expected to increase more than 25 percent in the next five years. Children have unique physical and psychological needs that require special medical expertise and equipment to address. Community donations will: Build a separate Pediatric Emergency Room at Sparrow Hospital, staffed by pediatric specialists and equipped with the latest technology. Bring together pediatric diagnostic and pediatric treatment technology in the same facility to optimize convenience and minimize anxiety for children and their families. Furnish the Pediatric ER with medical equipment specific to children, such as special endoscopes, respiratory therapy devices and blood pressure cuffs. Attract and retain the finest pediatric emergency specialists.
