Improving our Operating Rooms

Just think about what the word “surgery” means to you when you hear about a friend who was rushed into the OR for an emergency procedure. Or think of the grateful feeling you had when a loved one has regained their life or their health as a result of the surgical expertise available at Sparrow Hospital.

More than 22,000 surgeries are performed at Sparrow each year. These range from relatively simple outpatient procedures to complex orthopedic procedures, life-saving trauma surgery and complex open-heart surgery.

Surgery is not a luxury in today’s high tech, state-of-the-art world of health care. And not every operation is planned in advance. That’s why we have both an opportunity and a medical duty to provide the residents and the surgeons of this region with updated surgical facilities.

To remain in the forefront of surgical medicine, Sparrow must replace surgical facilities built to accommodate yesterday’s technology and invest in the finest facilities to support the most advanced surgical equipment. You and your loved ones deserve no less.

One such piece of equipment is the daVinci Robotic Surgical System that was implemented at Sparrow in spring 2005.

Sparrow surgeons perform more than 22,000 surgical procedures each year. Sparrow’s current operating room suites were built more than 20 years ago, when the hospital averaged about 15,000 surgeries per year. Community donations will: Update and enlarge Sparrow’s operating rooms to accommodate new technologies, including robotic surgery and state-of-the-art anesthesia machines. Add new, patient-centered features including a two-phase recovery room, and more convenient parking and drop-off/pick-up areas. Increase the number of operating rooms from 16 to 18, including two operating rooms for trauma surgeries. Expand the waiting room to more comfortably support families of surgery patients.

The daVinci surgical system affords surgeons a magnified three-dimensional videoscopic view of the operative field and precise articulating laparoscopic instruments. This new surgical system offers more precision, faster recovery and better surgical outcomes. Offering state-of-the-art technology also attracts quality physicians to our community.
