Sparrow Health System joins the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) which then included 23 hospitals across the United States.
Bubba Smith, movie star and former MSU All-American Football player, serves as the honorary chairman.
1989
The Sparrow Pediatric Intensive Care Unit opens on 5 South.
The Sparrow Regional Children’s Center opens offering 23 children’s beds in newly renovated rooms.
1991
Ron Mason, MSU Head Hockey Coach, becomes CMN Honorary Chair.

1993
Fundraising through CMN to help build a Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is started, with $507,990 raised.
1994
Across the United States, CMN participating hospitals increases to 160.
1998
The Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit opens after five years of fundraising through CMN.
First set of quintuplets in mid-Michigan were born at Sparrow, Leith, Lucas, Lindsey, Lauren and Logan Curtis.
A new Pediatric Transport Ambulance Unit is purchased for the Sparrow Regional Children’s Center.
The first CMN giving club, The Ron Mason Fund for Kids, is established to support pediatric rehabilitation at Sparrow, raising over $460,313 in the first year.

1999
The Coaches for Kids Fund, supporting a future Pediatric Emergency Room is established with the support of
the MSU Athletic Department and Former MSU Football Coach Nick Saban. The fund, originally called “Nicks Kids,”
is renamed when the entire MSU Athletic Department pledges its support.
Tim Staudt’s Ultimate Golf Outing hosts its first event in support of the pediatric emergency room.
The CMN WILX TV10 Telethon breaks the million-dollar mark with a final toteboard total of $1,220,142.
2000
Coaches for Kids surpasses its initial goal of raising $2 million. The committee agreed on a new goal of raising $5 million.
2001
Athletes for Kids is established to encourage student athletes at MSU to support fundraising efforts for children’s health programs.

2002
Pediatric Program Fund is developed with the help of Steve Guertin, MD to raise awareness of the needs of
sub-specialty physicians in our community. This fund raises $472,900 its first year.

The Tom Izzo Sparrow Health Classic raises $201,000 for the future pediatric emergency room.
Eight new private rooms are built and 21 other rooms are renovated for the new Sparrow Mother~Baby Center.

2003
Officials for Kids is established with Ken Sudall, Sports Official assignor and owner of Go Green Glass, as
Committee Chairman.
27 CMN National Sponsors in our community raise over $175,000 for the Sparrow Regional Children’s Center.
Some of the national sponsors include Speedway, Sam’s Club & Wal-Mart, Rite-Aid, Auntie Anne’s Pretzels,
Marriott Properties and Re/Max Realtors.
2004
Sparrow and Children’s Miracle Network team up with Mid-Michigan Radio Group to broadcast the CMN Radiothon
for three days of local kid stories.

2005
Max’s Race is established and supports the pediatric program fund, founded by the parents of Max, Jim and
Natalie Mathews. Over 400 runners and walkers come out to support the event and raise $20,000 for our cause.

2007
Sparrow teams up with another CMN initiative called Cure Kids Cancer to increase awareness to our community
and support the physicians who provide care to our community.
Business for Kids is established to support local businesses wanting to get involved with Healthcare for
Kids as a charter member. Founder of Business for Kids is Dominic Carbone, owner of Hungry Howies.
2008
Children’s Miracle Network Television station begins airing all past miracle stories of the telethon in Sparrow
patient rooms.
Mid-Michigan’s first ever Pediatric ER, the Granger Pediatric Emergency Department, opens in the new Sparrow Tower.
