Family Medicine Residency Education Program
Celebrating a Legacy in Lansing
In 1997, Sparrow and St. Lawrence Hospitals merged, followed shortly thereafter by the Sparrow and St. Lawrence/MSU Family Medicine Programs. The new, combined
program remains community-based, with a strong affiliation with Michigan State University.
Today, the Sparrow/MSU Family Medicine Program provides cutting edge, premier Family Medicine training for eight residents annually, drawing on the more than 50 years
of combined experience and expertise in Family Medicine education, passed on by both parent programs. Ideas, themes and people, derived from both Sparrow and St. Lawrence,
are tightly woven into the fabric of the current program structure.
Family Medicine graduates are highly respected, and play a critical role in improving the health status of the people of mid-Michigan and in communities around the
country. Of the 400 total graduates, 75 currently practice in the greater Lansing area. More than 50 percent of Sparrows Family Medicine Department graduated from either
the combined or parent programs.
Despite our resounding success in producing excellent family physicians, graduate medical education has faced ever-increasing challenges over the years in the areas of
funding, accreditation and regulation.
While the Sparrow Health System views graduate medical education as an important part of its mission, it is imperative that our
program maintains a healthy ability to independently respond to special educational and training opportunities, when the need arises, and to support the continued
professional development of our graduates.
Supporting the Legacy
Now, you have the opportunity to support the residency program through the Sparrow Foundations Family Medicine Residency

residents and alumni. All donations will be placed into our restricted education fund, and available to our program only for educational
and professional development purposes. Examples of projects benefiting from fund donations include course materials, updated room video monitors used in communication
skills training, professional development and networking opportunities for program alumni.
Your participation in this gifting program is greatly appreciated. Invest in Family Medicine
education in the greater Lansing area, and consider the impact your support will have on the quality of health care in communities
today and tomorrow.
