The Healing Garden and Labyrinth
Sparrow Health System is home to the state of Michigans first hospital-based labyrinth. The 36-foot wide
circular maze pattern highlights the Healing Garden located between the Sparrow Professional Building and the parking deck.
Dating back to ancient Greece and Egypt, labyrinths are used as meditative devices. Walking the course of a labyrinth is believed to help suspend conscious thinking and quiet the mind and heart. The labyrinth at Sparrow features concentric circles and a rosette-shaped center, modeled after a similar pattern in a plaza next to Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. The path that leads to the center, and back again, is approximately one-third of a mile. The labyrinth is surrounded by fragrant flower beds, trees and shrubbery, a water fountain, and benches for patients and visitors to reflect and find peace.
