A Path to Sparrow Hospice
The Story of Pat Canning...
Pat Canning found her path in the communities of Lansing and East Lansing. Her dedicated team spirit was well known at the MSU women’s basketball games among the team and fans; Pat held season tickets for more than 40 years. She assisted in establishing the MSU women’s basketball boosters and was the first secretary of this group known as the Fastbreak Club.
Without immediate family in the area, the women’s basketball team became Pat’s family. She developed relationships with the players and now-head coach Suzy Merchant. With the players frequently on the road and far from home, Pat was a loving grandmother figure for many.
When Pat fell ill at 80 years old, she requested the services of Sparrow Hospice.
There she received compassionate, committed care from Sparrow Hospice nurses during her end of life care.
The MSU women’s basketball team coordinated with Sparrow Hospice’s music therapy program for one last thank you to Pat. As the team serenaded her with the MSU fight song, accompanied by Sparrow trumpeter, Pat’s eyes opened one last time and a smile came across her face.
Though Pat’s death was a great loss for the team, the women took comfort in knowing they had been able to make her last days a little brighter with the help of Sparrow Hospice Services. Please hike on October 4 to ensure others can receive end of life care and services as they complete life’s journey.
