Background:
Dr. Johnson completed his residency and fellowship in general and cardiothoracic surgery at Duke University in 1995, serving as chief resident of general and thoracic surgery (1993-94) and teaching scholar in cardiothoracic surgery (1994-95). Dr. Johnson also completed research training in biochemistry at Emory (1981-82) and nuclear cardiology (1984-85) and cardiac physiology (1988-90) at Duke.
He served as assistant professor of surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery for the Washington University School of Medicine in Missouri (1995-97) and attending cardiothoracic surgeon for St. Johns Mercy Medical Center in Missouri (1997-2005) and Provena Covenant Medical Center in Illinois (2005).
Dr. Johnson also served as director of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Database at Washington University School of Medicine (1996-97) and was a member of the CABG Care Map Committee at Duke University Medical Center (1993-95); Society of Thoracic Surgery Health Policy, Practice and Reform Resource Group (2001-04) and secretary/treasurer of the St. Louis Thoracic Surgical Society.
