Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABG)

In Coronary Artery Disease(CAD) the arteries that carry blood to your heart become blocked. This can lead to a heart attack. Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (also called CABG) uses a graft, or blood vessel from another part of your body, to make a new pathway (bypass) around the blockage.

Risk Factors

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Diabetes

Smoking, being overweight, and eating unhealthy foods can raise your risk even higher. Controlling these risks can help make your heart healthier. Other risk factors such as age or a family history of heart disease cannot be changed

Symptoms

When you have CAD, your heart is not getting enough blood and oxygen to function properly. Symptoms can be:

  • Angina - a feeling of pain, pressure, aching, tingling, or burning in the chest, back, neck, throat, jaw, arms, or shoulders
  • Tiredness or lack of energy
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea

Women often have different symptoms than men. For some, especially those with Diabetes, there may be no obvious symptoms.
