Carotid Endarterectomy, Carotid Artery Stenting

The carotid arteries carry blood to the brain. Plaque (a fatty material) can collect inside these arteries affecting bloodflow, which can lead to a stroke.

Procedures

Procedures

Carotid Endarterectomy is an open surgery to remove plaque from the artery. An incision is made in the skin over the artery. The artery is opened and the plaque is removed then both incisions are closed. Carotid artery stenting is a minimally invasive procedure to improve blood flow by placing a wire mesh tube, or stent, in the artery to hold it open.
