A laser fiber is placed inside the vein and positioned using ultrasound. Laser energy applied to the catheter destroys the vein lining, causing the vein to shrink and ultimately disappear. Circulation spontaneously diverts to the normal deep veins, causing high pressure in the veins and branches to disappear.
Symptoms of Vein Insufficiency
- Leg pain
- Swelling
- Varicose and spider veins
- Ulcers
Causes of Vein Disorders
The most common cause of vein disorders is malfunction of the greater saphenous vein, a large vein running on the inside of the leg from the groin to the ankle. The bicuspid valves within this vein do not close, creating excess pressure in the vein and all of its branches.
