Vascular Studies

Decreased blood flow can happen in arteries and veins anywhere in the body. Strokes can occur if the carotid arteries in the neck become blocked. Vascular studies are non-invasive procedures(the skin is not pierced) that assess the blood flow in arteries and veins.

Procedures

Procedures

During the procedure, a transmitter is placed on your skin at certain locations and angles and those waves move through other body tissues and echo off the blood cells. The reflected waves are sent to an amplifier, making them audible.

Vascular studies may be performed for, but not limited to the following reasons:

  • Evaluation of signs or symptoms that may indicate decreased blood flow in the arteries and veins of the neck, legs or arms
  • Evaluation of previous procedures performed to restore blood flow to an area
  • Evaulation of a vascular dialysis device, such as an AV fistula in the arm

Symptoms of decreased blood flow include (but are not limited to):

  • Leg pain and/or weakness during exertion
  • Swelling
  • Soreness, tenderness, redness, and/or warmth in the leg(s)
  • Pale and cool skin; may be greyish or blue in color
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Rest pain, which is pain in the foot that occurs when sitting or lying down and is relieved by standing
