Joint Replacement

What happens after joint replacement surgery?
Following your joint replacement surgery, you will be assigned an Inpatient Orthopedic Rehabilitation Team consisting of a core group of rehabilitation professionals. The team includes an experienced physical therapist, occupational therapist and their therapy assistants who are dedicated to providing consistent, effective and customer-focused rehabilitative care to orthopedic patients while giving support and guidance to their families and caregivers.

Inpatient Orthopedic Rehabilitation is fully integrated within the Sparrow Health System Rehab Unit, working cooperatively with nursing in the pre-operative joint replacement class and following through with exercise and training immediately after surgery to assist patients in regaining or compensating for lost mobility and physical function.

Hospitalized patients are seen by Physical Therapy for gait (walking) training with or without assistive devices such as crutches or walkers. Instruction in gait on level surfaces and stairs is a key element of care. Physical therapists also provide education and practice in bed mobility, toilet and tub/shower transfers, along with any applicable precautions. Strengthening exercises, emphasizing muscles in the surgical limb, are included in the therapy sessions.

Occupational Therapy focuses on helping patients regain skills to complete functional tasks, such as bathing, dressing, grooming and toileting. Occupational therapists may provide and/or recommend certain equipment for the bathroom or kitchen and to aid in the completion of dressing tasks. Patients are seen as needed to assist in regaining their skills within the context of daily living activities.

The Orthopedic Rehabilitation Team members further serve as liaisons to Home Care and Outpatient Rehabilitation Services, thus completing the continuous loop of surgical and rehabilitation services in those instances where such intervention is warranted.

Why and when would I need Home Care?
Although many patients may be discharged directly to Sparrow Outpatient Rehab, some may need the assistance of Sparrow Home Care's Rehabilitation Team. For many patients, recovery may take a little longer due to chronic medical problems, and the Home Care team has experience to provide the needed treatments and equipment. The recovery process at home will consist of highly trained nurses and therapists who work directly with physicians to individualize each patient's plan of care. The Sparrow Home Care team will reinforce many of the same care elements received during the hospital stay. The focus of each visit will assist the patient and caregiver in identifying areas needing improvement and will ensure that the Home Exercise Program is successful. We will work with the entire team to provide optimal rehabilitation. The Home Care team will receive information from your hospital stay and know up front where you are in your recovery. Choosing the assistance of the Sparrow Home Care team may allow you to return home sooner, where you are in comfortable, familiar surroundings and will foster self-care and increased activity. It will also allow your family to assist in your recovery and the healing process.

The Sparrow Home Care team will conduct a home safety inspection to ensure your home is set up for the most optimal rehab progress. The team will assess your bathroom for safety features, the location of your bedroom (do you need to climb steps?), your kitchen set up, and your major living area. The Home Care Team will look for loose steps, railings, throw rugs, extension cord placements and lighting to name just a few. Additionally, the Home Care team will review fall precautions, including discussions regarding our vision, medications, medical equipment and exercise program.
