Private/semiprivate dance lessons are available for those students looking for oneonone instruction. Many students inquire about private lessons to learn ballroom for a wedding, audition for their schools dance team or to simply improve their dance skills in all styles of dance. We also offer group lessons for brownie troupes and private groups. Private lessons must be prearranged through the dance coordinator. Please contact dance coordinator Tracy Holtzer at 517.364.8870 for rates and group information.
Ballet
The fundamental style of all dance forms, ballet will help you gain strength, flexibility, coordination and grace. Students will work at the barre, in the center and across the floor to develop the patterning needed to execute this dance of royalty!
Belly Dance
Experience the ancient undulating qualities that this dance is famous for. You will be introduced to movements synonymous with folkloric and modern Egyptian styles, and learn how to combine body isolations with traveling steps. Additional emphasis will be placed on Arab culture and customs as expressed through the dance.
Flamenco Dance (Sevillanas)
Sevillanas is an internationally renowned Andalusian folk dance that has become synonymous with the flamenco of Southern Spain. An excellent way to enhance posture, coordination and body tone, this class will guide the beginner dancer through the basic steps of all four parts of the Sevillanas. The course will also cover the basic flamenco style, posture, hand, arm and foot placement. No prior flamenco experience is required.
HipHop
Shane Marie King teaches a style of dance that began on the streets of New York and has evolved to become popular culture. A combination of R&B, Rap, and Dance music inspires this fresh and funky dance
style as seen in music videos today.
Jazz>
Several characteristics help determine jazz dance: quality of movement, rhythm, syncopation and interpretation of the movement. Dancers will incorporate several jazz styles into the class such as lyrical jazz, urban jazz, funk and modern forms. Each level will work at a different pace with prior experience necessary for registration in the advanced level.
Tango & Cha-cha
The Tango which was developed out of Argentina is known as one of the most powerful and dramatic dances, characterized by staccato movements, dips and gancho flicks. Its commonly referred to as the dancers dance where the men get to be men and the women love it! The Cha-Cha adds fun to your dancing through its syncopated steps and many open movements. The pulsating Latin rhythms make this dance so fascinating, encouraging you to cute loose and let your personality show. Emphasis is placed on three important elements of dancing in each style: foot placement, rhythm and timing as well as lead and follow. Partners and singles are welcome.
Tap
This class will explore the rhythms produced by your feet while learning tap terminology and rhythms that adhere to each level. We will expand upon the rhythms and syncopation as the class progresses. Tap shoes are required.
West Coast Swing & Charleston
This is a concentration on 2 types of swing: West Coast Swing and Charleston. This provides a nice balance of styles, type of music and emotion. West Coast Swing, also called sophisticated swing, is a smooth dance performed in a slot and gives the dancers options for creativity. Charleston, a dance of the 20s, is being revived and can be danced solo or with a partner. The basic step allows for a vast range of variations and improvisations. The Charleston is playful, fun and encourages students to express themselves. Both partners and singles are welcome to attend.
