Children must become more physically active to ensure healthier lives. To encourage area children to increase activity, Sparrow and Kohl’s Cares partner every year to offer the Feelin’ Good Mileage Club.
The voluntary program is designed to make exercise fun by offering students in grades PK-6 the chance to walk/run during designated recess or lunch periods. The eight-week program runs from April 8-May 31. During that time, students earn a "Toe Token" (a brightly colored plastic foot) for every 5 miles logged and all students completing 20 miles will earn a specially designed water bottle.
In 2012, more than 18,000 mid-Michigan children logged 220,615 miles on their way to better health while earning fun prizes.
The Feelin' good Mileage Club was chosen as the 2011 "Best Community-Based Program" in the country by Club Industry, a magazine for fitness business professional. And, results of a parent survey show kids love participating and the program is effective. Of parents who responded, about 75 percent observed an increase in their child's physical activity.
The Feelin’ Good Mileage Club is available free of charge to schools in Clinton, Eaton, Gratiot, Ingham, Ionia, Livingston, Montcalm and Shiawassee counties, but will be limited to the first 150 schools to enroll. Participation is limited, so register your school as soon as possible!
