The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Sparrow Health System, the flagship teaching hospital of Michigan State University, has a commitment to provide
both leading-edge technology and outstanding patient care.
On arrival, your baby is received by a team of nurses and doctors, who assess and treat your baby's condition.
Intravenous access, laboratory and radiologic tests are performed to better diagnose and treat your baby's condition. Doctors
and nurses will inform you as more information becomes available.
You will likely be asked to sign important consents which include permission to treat, to place lines (to be able to administer medication and fluids, for
monitoring of blood pressure, to obtain blood tests, etc.), or to do special procedures depending on the type of baby's problem (lumbar puncture, chest tube placement),
and to give transfusions of blood products. Feel free to ask any questions.
You may also be asked to have your child participate in a research or clinical trial as part of Sparrow's mission to support
research to improve patient care. Your answer should be made after careful consideration of information provided by researchers, physicians or other medical personnel familiar
with your child's situation and taking into account feelings of family members and loved ones.
