The distance between life as he knew it and life in a wheelchair was 2 millimeters for Michigan State University student Eric Phreed.
In July, Eric was competing in a bike race in Midland when his tire came off the rim in the final turn.
His helmet was crushed when his head hit the roadway. Eric's vertebrae had separated from the alignment of the spine, and doctors
told him he was 2 millimeters away from having become a quadriplegic.
Eric was transferred from Midland to Sparrow where neurosurgeon Dr. Charles Bill operated to repair the damage to Eric's spine.
"Dr. Bill is contagiously likeable. I just want to shake his hand and never let go! He was so helpful, took time to answer all of my
questions and explain what had happened to me. The computer technology he uses to show you what's happened is great."
