Friday, May 28, 2010 - Sparrow CEO Dennis Swan dedicates Dr. Joseph L. Sheets Stork Express and Mother Baby Center

LANSING, Mich. — Paying tribute to the legacy of a beloved physician, Sparrow President and CEO Dennis A. Swan recently dedicated the Dr. Joseph L. Sheets Stork Express and the Dr. Joseph L. Sheets Mother Baby Center inside Sparrow Hospital.

“Dr. Sheets was respected by his patients and colleagues alike, and his legacy continues to inspire us all,” Swan said. “This dedication honors his professional and personal contributions to Sparrow and our comunities. Every time a baby is born at the Dr. Joseph L. Sheets Mother Baby Center, the legacy of caring created by this important figure in the community will be strengthened.”

The dedication was conducted during a private May 24 ceremony.

The Sheets Mother Baby Center, located on the third floor of the hospital’s Neumann Wing, is designed to make the birthing experience more gratifying. The center is also a complete training center for first-time mothers seeking to familiarize themselves with the latest techniques of child care. The Sheets Stork Express refers to elevator No. 6 – a special call elevator reserved for expectant mothers. More than 4,000 babies are born annually at Sparrow Hospital.

Joseph L. Sheets, M.D., was a pioneer whose distinguished career included more than 5,000 major surgeries and 10,000 deliveries. His firsts at Sparrow included the use of electronic fetal monitors and performing laparoscopic surgeries. He served as the first full clinical professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. He established Sparrow’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Women’s Pavilion, and co-founded Physicians Health Plan of Mid-Michigan. Dr. Sheets created Sparrow’s OB/GYN Residency Program and mentored scores of resident physicians. He also established the Joseph L. Sheets Endowment to ensure continued resources for future generations of residents.

Dr. Sheets received the 2004 Sparrow Founders’ Award and was inducted into the Physicians Hall of Fame in 2006.
