Infants from throughout mid-Michigan who require specialized care their local
hospital cannot provide are transported to Sparrow's Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit. Babies may be transported to the NICU 24/7 by ground transport.
Neonatal nurses, respiratory therapists, paramedics and emergency medical
technicians staff every neonatal transport. The team is supervised via phone
contact by a neonatologist at Sparrow, to monitors each tiny patient's condition
and support the baby's medical needs. Under certain conditions, a physician may
accompany the team. The neonatal transport team uses Sparrow's specially
designed ambulance for transporting babies.
