What our Nurse Residents are saying...
Jessica Eastman, RN
Beginning my interviewing process
at the end of school I was convinced that I wanted a position in Obstetrics
and nothing else. I did my leadership rotation in my last semester of
nursing school on a labor and delivery floor and loved it. I was convinced this
is where I wanted to begin my nursing career. I began looking into
positions here at Sparrow and realized this may not be realistic as a new nurse.
I found some information about the nurse residency program and it
grabbed my attention. I thought it would be a good chance for me to
get some experience on the different floors at Sparrow and see what else
I was interested in. It was also a great opportunity for me since I did
all my clinicals in Grand Rapids and was not familiar with Sparrow.
Medical/Surgical was always really intimidating to me throughout school and I had
no interest in it, or so I thought. As I went through the residency I realized I
did have some interest in medical/surgical and realized what a great learning
opportunity it was for me as a new nurse. One of my favorite floors in my rotation was the neuro stepdown unit and this ended up being my first
choice and where I ended up taking a position after the residency. The
residency program really helped me realize how many opportunities there
are in nursing and I'm very glad now that I went through the program.
Starting on an intermediate floor opens the door for many different
opportunities for me in the future, whether it be Obstetrics at some point down the road or
staying in medical/surgical.
