The Adult Inpatient Psychiatry Unit is a 31-bed short-term treatment unit that provides quality diagnosis and treatment of mental illness to
assist patients in rapid return to the community and community-based treatment. The APU operates under
a contractual agreement between Sparrow Health System, the Department of Psychiatry at Michigan State University,
and the Tri-County Community Mental Health Board. As such, APU also a teaching unit for psychiatric residents, medical students, student nurses, psychology interns
and activity therapy students. This arrangement promotes quality care since teaching institutions must maintain high standards and keep up to
date on new treatments while providing intense student supervision. Services are provided through the coordinated efforts of various mental health
professionals who make up a treatment team. The teams include psychiatrists, therapists, activity therapists, registered nurses, psychiatric technicians, and chaplains.
