The Geriatric Inpatient Psychiatry Unit is a 23-bed unit that provides evaluation and treatment services for patients who have a
diagnosis of mental illness and who have attained the age of 60 years or have problems consistent with that age population and require 24-hour inpatient treatment,
assessment, and observation. Patients may be referred by family members, private physicians or by community agencies such as the Senior Health Center at
Sparrow Health System, nursing homes, or by a community mental health program. The majority of patients treated are diagnosed as having a major
depression, an organic mental disorder, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia. Treatment modalities include psychopharmacology, individual
therapy, group therapy, family therapy, activity therapy, pastoral counseling, and nursing care. In selected cases, electroconvulsive therapy may be used.
Medical services and services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, or respiratory therapy are available as needed.
