Our residency program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education through the Residency Review Committee of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The curriculum complies with all essential requirements outlined by the ACGME and is overseen by the residency program director Dr. Matthew Allswede with input from the Associate Program Directors and members of the Residency Education Committee.
Experience and responsibilities are
graduated throughout the four years of training. First and second
year resident experience focuses on acquiring basic skills and core
knowledge, while third and fourth year residents develop their
leadership skills in the context of supervising junior residents in
clinical settings and educational rounds. Educational objectives for
each residency year and each rotation are distributed to the
residents and discussed
with each resident semi-annually during their performance review with the Program Director.
Year I
Residents learn the basic skills and core knowledge in obstetrics and gynecology. They focus on low-risk obstetric patients and routine antenatal care and risk assessment. Residents assist and/or perform approximately 120 vaginal deliveries and 100 cesarean sections in the first year of residency. In gynecology, they gain experience in the preoperative assessment of patients and related decision-making, as well as routine postoperative management. They are taught minor gynecologic surgical procedures and laparotomy and assist at some major surgeries. Lastly, the resident will also acquire extensive experience in primary care, learning to evaluate and manage common primary care problems.

Year II
Residents gain skills and knowledge necessary to care
for more complicated patients. They care for
the high-risk intrapartum patients on the obstetric service
and help to supervise first year residents. Second year
residents participate in operative vaginal deliveries and more complicated
obstetric surgical procedures. In gynecology, the resident participates in more
operative endoscopy and major abdominal surgeries while also being
introduced to vaginal surgery. Second year residents participate in the
Southeast Michigan Center for Medical Education, which offers
a core curriculum in obstetrics and gynecology with emphasis on the
basic sciences, pathology and clinical correlation.
