In 1896, thirty-seven women founded what is now called Sparrow Hospital. Through the years, the mission of Sparrow has been to build a better community by improving
the healthcare status of the people who live and work in the mid-Michigan region. From those humble beginnings, Sparrow has grown and evolved to become a 697-bed teaching hospital and a regional
leader in innovative health care committed to advancing the current state of the art clinical and therapeutic applications, principles, and modalities.
Recognized as a leader in the academic and professional training of its medical staff, Sparrow was the first institution in Michigan to be fully
accredited by the Michigan State Medical Society for its continuing medical education programs. As a major affiliate of Michigan State University College
of Human Medicine and the College of Osteopathic Medicine, physician faculty from Michigan State join the medical staff at Sparrow to teach and participate in daily rounds,
conferences, consultations, and other educational activities. Sparrow is also accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, the American
Osteopathic Association, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the College of American Pathologists (fertility and toxicology programs), and the National Commission on
Quality Assurance "Excellence Rating" for Physicians Health Plan of mid-Michigan. The American Cancer Society recognizes the Sparrow Cancer Center as one of the top three cancer programs
in Michigan, while ten of the Sparrow physician practices have earned the Governor's Award for preventive health by the Michigan Peer Review Organization.
While many people speak of a "tradition of excellence" those of us at
Sparrow live it in the way we care for our patients, and in the care we take
in training and developing our resident physicians. We invite you to join
the Sparrow Hospital team for your training, and experience the challenge
and rewards of living and being part of our tradition of excellence.
