Clinical Experience: Gynecologic Service
The gynecologic service cares for a large volume of
patients with surgical needs. Over 5,000 major and minor gynecologic
procedures are performed annually, including minimally invasive surgery
and daVinci
robotics
procedures. Residents participate
in the majority of these surgeries under the direct
supervision of faculty. Educational emphasis is on graduated
responsibility and operative experience for the residents. Each program graduate finishes
with broad training in all aspects of contemporary gynecologic
practice, experienced in a broad array of operative
endoscopy, vaginal and urogynecologic procedures, as well as
major abdominal, oncologic, reproductive endocrinologic and laser
procedures.
Under the supervision of faculty, residents
operate on their own patients from the continuity care
clinics and actively participate in the operative and postoperative care
of private patients. While on the subspecialty services and within
their own clinics, residents participate in the outpatient
postoperative care and longitudinal follow-up of surgical patients.
The Gynecologic Oncology
Service
spearheads the care of patients
with invasive genital malignancies. Over 200 new patients and nearly
1,500 return patients are cared for annually on this service. The Gynecologic
Oncologists perform over 150 major surgical procedures yearly with residents
involved in virtually all cases, including radical surgery. A weekly
Gynecologic Tumor Conference provides each resident an opportunity to
experience the interdisciplinary approach to patient management.
Two sub-specialists provide reproductive
endocrinology and infertility services, including assisted
reproductive technologies. Each of these faculty members is
dedicated to residency education. Together, they supervise a
subspecialty rotation, provide didactic education support, provide
and supervise operative experiences for the residents and supervise
a specialty clinic within the Residency Clinic. A Ph.D. Embryologist
staffs a dedicated Assisted Reproductive Technologies Laboratory.
