The principal goal of the residency program is to develop obstetrician-gynecologists capable of providing highly competent
specialty care as generalists and consultants and primary care for women throughout their life stages. By combining the best
features of traditional community-based and university programs, our residency prepares and qualifies its graduates to become board-certified
by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The educational experience is subspecialty-derived and facilitated by a group of dedicated faculty with diverse educational and personal backgrounds.
Through a system of graduated responsibility, residents acquire and retrieve the medical knowledge, clinical judgment, technical skills and interpersonal skills
to practice contemporary medicine with confidence.
Throughout residency training, emphasis is placed on the importance of developing behaviors that support a desire for life-long learning, emphasizing the role of
physicians as teachers in every day practice. Along those same lines, residents are appointed Clinical Resident Instructors in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive
Biology at Michigan State University. Faculty privileges are extended
to the Resident Instructors and they participate fully as integral members
of the clerkship faculty, teaching third and fourth year medical students.
Our residents take this responsibility seriously and many have had their
efforts recognized by winning teaching awards from the graduating medical
school classes.
