Residents
enjoy ample clinical opportunity in all aspects of our specialty. Sparrow Hospital
is the largest mid-Michigan community hospital and supports the Regional
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Over 4,000 births occur yearly at Sparrow
Hospital and residents participate in the majority of these deliveries. Residents participate
with our Maternal/Fetal Medicine specialist in providing antenatal
genetic counseling and testing, ultrasonography and fetal diagnostic testing.
The service receives high-risk maternal transports from a nine county region. In
addition, a very active Residency Clinic service provides obstetrical care for
many high-risk patients, as well as low-risk patients cared for in individual
resident's continuity care clinics.
Modern facilities for mother/baby care are
conveniently located on the third floor of Sparrow Hospital. The Labor and
Delivery Unit supports twelve spacious private Labor/Delivery/Recovery
rooms with central fetal heart rate monitoring. The Obstetric
Special Care Unit
is equipped with eight beds for antenatal care. The thirty-eight bed postpartum unit is adjacent to the Newborn and Transitional Nurseries. Rooming-in is available and supported in the all private rooms as the entire Mother/Baby Center combines modern facilities and technologies with a family-centered feel to match the patient care philosophy of the department.
Pediatric support for the obstetrics program is
excellent. The 40 bed Regional Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit
cares for over 500 neonates annually with an active
outreach program. The Pediatric Department supports a fellowship
training program in Neonatology.
