Respiratory Protection Standard (29 CFR 1910.134) requires respirators be used in areas where engineering controls alone cannot protect workers from atmospheric contamination at the worksite. Companies requiring the use of respirators must have a respirator program in place as outlined in the Standard. Included in this program are:
- Written respiratory protection program
- Respirator selection
- Medical evaluation
- Fit testing
- Training
- Program evaluation
Sparrow Occupational Health Services offers both the medical evaluation (review of the OSHA Respirator Medical Evaluation Questionnaire or medical examination) as well as a quantitative respirator fit testing evaluation.
The technology used for quantitative respirator fit testing is the TSI PortaCount Plus. Ambient aerosol QNFT instrument measures aerosol concentration outside and inside the respirator and computes a true fit factor. The challenge agent used is the ambient microscopic dust and other aerosols that are present in the air we breathe at all times.
