Osteoporosis is a progressive and degenerative bone loss disease that results in an increase risk of spine, hip,
wrist, arm and leg fractures. According to a report by the US Surgeon General, each year roughly 1.5 million people suffer a bone fracture related to
osteoporosis. About 20% of senior citizens who suffer a hip fracture die within a year of fracture.
Contrary to popular belief, women are not the only ones affected. One in five men over age 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime.
Early detection and treatment is essential to diminish the potentially debilitating and disabling effects of osteoporosis. The Sparrow Ramblewood Imaging Center utilizes a
state-of-the-art DEXA Scanner to measure bone density in hips, forearms and backs. Sparrow recommends adequate calcium, vitamin D, appropriate exercise and, in some cases, medication for maintaining bone health.
