Bone density

A bone density test can help tell if someone has osteoporosis (bone density loss) or if they are at risk for osteoporosis.

Bone Density testing is offered at:

  • Carson City Hospital
  • Sparrow Clinton Hospital
  • Sparrow Ramblewood Imaging Center
  • Sparrow Ionia Hospital

Coronary CTA

A Coronary CTA is a noninvasive heart-imaging test used to determine the presence of either fatty deposits or calcium deposits developing in the coronary arteries. The coronary arteries supply blood to the heart muscle. If left untreated, these areas of build-up, called plaques, can cause heart muscle disease. Heart muscle disease can lead to symptoms of fatigue, shortness of breath, and chest pain. Blockages in these arteries can result in heart attacks and sudden death.

Coronary CTA is offered at Sparrow Hospital.

CT Scan

CT Scan (also called CT, computerized tomography, or CAT Scan) is an x-ray technique that produces images, with the aid of a highly sophisticated computer, of your internal organs that are more detailed than those produced by conventional x-ray exams.

CT scans are offered at:

  • Sparrow Clinton Hospital
  • Sparrow St. Lawrence
  • Sparrow Hospital
  • Sparrow Ramblewood Imaging Center
  • Sparrow Ionia Hospital

Diagnostic X-ray

Diagnostic X-ray is the oldest and most widely used means of medical imaging. Diagnostic X-ray uses an external radiation source to image the human body. The source is placed over the area of concern or interest, and a technologist controls the amount of radiation from a control console. Images are often obtained in fractions of a second, and then processed and analyzed for quality.

As part of our commitment to provide the very best in equipment and technology, Sparrow Radiology implemented a new, fully digital, Diagnostic X-ray department at Sparrow Hospital in May 2008. The digital equipment now used at Sparrow Hospital is among the most advanced imaging technology available.

Diagnostic X-rays are offered at all Sparrow Radiology locations.

Fluoroscopy

Fluoroscopy has two fundamental differences from traditional Diagnostic X-ray. First, the images are captured much like a movie camera, and thus images are seen “live” on a television monitor; second, the studies often require the addition of a contrast agent, which is a substance that is introduced into the body to specifically set apart a particular organ or particular area of interest for further analysis. This contrast agent is usually barium or an iodine-based contrast, depending on the exam.

Fluoroscopy is offered at:

  • Sparrow Clinton Hospital
  • Sparrow Ionia Hospital
  • Sparrow St. Lawrence
  • Sparrow Hospital

Mammography

Breast imaging is provided for screening, routine and diagnostic evaluation. Additional procedures include mammography and ultrasound guided biopsies, stereotactic breast biopsies and aspiration procedures.

Mammography services are offered at the following locations:

  • Okemos Diagnostic Center (digital)
  • Ramblewood Imaging Center (digital)
  • Sparrow Professional Building (digital)
  • Sparrow Clinton Hospital (digital)
  • Sparrow Ionia Hospital (digital)
  • Sparrow St. Lawrence

Nuclear medicine

The images are developed based on the detection of energy emitted from a radioactive substance given to the patient either intravenously or by mouth. Generally, radiation to the patient is similar to that resulting from standard x-ray examinations.   Nuclear Medicine images can assist the physician in diagnosing diseases. Tumors, infection, and other disorders can be detected by evaluating organ function.

Nuclear medicine is offered at:

  • Sparrow Clinton Hospital
  • Sparrow Hospital
  • Sparrow Ionia Hospital

Positron Emission Tomography (PET)

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a camera that produces powerful images of the human body and allows the physician to see what is happening inside your body. PET/CT is a non-invasive procedure that provides unique information about the body's metabolism, cell function, and exact location of a disease - information not available through CT or MRI alone.

PET services are offered at Sparrow Hospital.

Ultrasound

Sparrow 's Ultrasound Department provides 24 hour service, including general ultrasound exams (abdomen, renal, breast, neonate neurosonography and thyroid), OB-GYN ultrasound exams, vascular studies and US guided invasive procedures. Sparrow Ultrasound is intimately related to the Sparrow Perinatal Center which provides high-risk Obstetic services under the direction of a board certified Perinatologist.

Staffed by Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (RDMS) and Registered Vascular Technologists (RVT), the department performs exams in an outpatient setting at the following locations:

  • Sparrow Professional Building (Monday through Friday)
  • Sparrow Ramblewood Imaging Center
  • Sparrow Hospital (7 days a week)
  • Sparrow Clinton Hospital
  • Sparrow Ionia Hospital
