Digital mammography is a long-awaited advance in technology that is streamlining the test for women and allowing doctors to better diagnose breast cancer, especially in women under 50. The new technology is a continuation of Sparrow's long-standing commitment to the support and enhancement of women's health.

Digital mammography allows the radiologists to see the images instantly, without waiting for the processing of film. The difference in image sharpness and clarity is significant, even to the untrained eye. Furthermore, the image can be enhanced digitally, which also reduces the need for repeat images.

At Sparrow Mammography, we are aware of your need for comfort and privacy during your exam. During installation of our new digital mammography machines, the mammography department at the Sparrow Professional Building was renovated to provide comfortable and relaxing waiting area especially for mammography patients. A separate, private area was created for patient conversations with the mammography technologists. The digital mammography machines have been equipped with special comfort paddles to ease discomfort during the exam.

A trained staff of radiology professionals examines and analyzes each mammogram film for abnormalities. In additional to our trained staff of specialists, all mammography films are subjected to a quality test by a Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) machine. The CAD machine is programmed to search for specific and known patterns of abnormalities commonly found in breast tissue, and scans each mammogram image and checks it for possible abnormalities. A radiologist further scrutinizes any possible abnormalities found by the CAD machine.
