Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS)
PACS is a system that acquires, transmits, stores (archives), retrieves (from storage), and displays digital images and related patient information from a variety of imaging modalities and communicates the information over a network.
It makes a soft copy reading of images possible, as opposed to hard copy (film) reading. Soft copy reading makes it possible to enhance images; in addition, images are available for viewing at multiple stations at the same time. Once the images are in digital format, the brightness and contrast levels can be manipulated, as well, there are display tools that allow for such things as image magnification, rotation and measurements.
The system also allows for connection to the Radiology / Hospital Information system. The RIS/HIS link ensures database integrity by validation of patient demographics. With RIS connectivity, clinicians have the ability to access the radiologists report with the study on any PACS workstation or PC. In addition, old studies can be retrieved for comparative purposes from the PACS archives.
