Catheter placements: More than 3.4 million CVACs are placed each year, and doctors increasingly recommend their use. There are several types of CVACs, including tunneled catheters (Hickman or Broviac), peripherally inserted central catheters (also called PICC lines or long lines), dialysis catheters, and implantable ports. In the past, surgery was required to insert these tubes, but today these procedures can be done without surgery by an interventional radiologist. The procedure is performed as outpatient while the patient is conscious, but sedated (drowsy and feeling no pain). The catheter is inserted through the vein to the correct position while the interventional radiologist guides the progress of the entire procedure using a moving x-ray.
![]() Liver catheters, Kidney catheters, Drainage catheters - People with certain diseases or medical conditions sometimes develop blockages that require tubes to be placed directly into the body so that the involved area can drain. In the past, surgery was required to insert these tubes, but today these procedures can be done without surgery by an interventional radiologist. |
